 In the Beginning

Minerva Lake Golf Course began in the late 1920's.
Following the start of the Depression in 1929, development at Minerva Park in
the north end of Columbus had come to a grinding halt, with many of the park
lands being sold for delinquent taxes and assessments. But local schoolteacher,
Harold Pollock, had an idea for the area that had once been home to a thriving
amusement park and was now in financial ruin. Already the owner of the 9-hole
Beaver Ridge course also in north Columbus, he built what would become one of
the most heavily patronized courses in central Ohio.
Initially opening
as a semi-private course, Pollock soon decided to make the course completely
public, a revolutionary idea in those days.
Maintaining a professional
and experienced staff was a priority at Minerva Lake from the beginning.
Pollock's early staff included course pro, Delbert Hamner.
The Pollock
family were all talented and dedicated golfers. Jim, Pollock's son, won the
district amateur tournament and played in national tournaments. Pollock's
daugher, Marilyn played in events like the Franklin County Amateur. It was only
natural then that the business would remain in the family.
Marilyn
married local golfer, Herm Groezinger, and as a team they took over the
business. Under their supervision the course was redesigned. Ed Williams was
hired as superintendent and PGA golf pro, Bob Jones was hired and remained on
staff until 1993.
Mark is the course superintendent. Minerva Lake has a long, proud history and
continues to be a favorite of Central Ohio golfers.
